Washington Senate Honors YMCA Milestones with Commemorative Resolution

The Washington State Senate passed a resolution this week recognizing two major milestones for one of the state’s most trusted community organizations: the 150th anniversary of the YMCA in Washington and the 175th anniversary of the YMCA’s founding in the United States.

The resolution was sponsored by Senator Jamie Pedersen, a longtime member and champion of the Seattle YMCA. Pedersen praised the YMCA for its century-and-a-half legacy of strengthening communities through education, health, and youth development.

Senators Highlight YMCA’s Broad Community Impact

Several senators rose in support of the resolution, each spotlighting different aspects of the YMCA’s contributions across Washington:

  • Senator Claire Wilson emphasized the Y’s childcare programs, its leadership in youth development, and the lasting influence of its camp experiences. She highlighted the successful reopening of Camp Kilworth this past summer, celebrating its return as a vital outdoor space for youth learning, confidence-building, and connection.

  • Senator Emily Alvarado praised the YMCA’s commitment to providing safe, accessible opportunities for young people—especially through youth sports, after-school programs, and community-building initiatives.

  • Senator Yasmin Trudeau focused on the Y’s crucial work in swim lessons and provider of water safety education—an essential skill for children and adults across the state.

  • Senator Marcus Riccelli spotlighted the Spokane YMCA, crediting it for its historical role in the creation of Father’s Day, which originated in Spokane in the early 20th century. He also underscored the YMCA’s ongoing leadership in civic education through the Youth & Government Program, which teaches teens legislative skills, debate, and public service.

Together, the senators portrayed the YMCA as an institution deeply woven into the state’s social fabric, one that continues to evolve and meet community needs across generations.
