Washington Youth Legislature Marks 79th Session at the State Capitol

The halls of the Washington State Capitol recently came alive with energy, debate, and civic purpose as hundreds of teens from across the state gathered for the 79th Youth Legislature, hosted by the YMCA Youth & Government program.

For four days, students stepped into the roles of lawmakers, lobbyists, and members of the press—immersing themselves in a hands-on simulation of the legislative process. At a time when civic engagement among young people is more critical than ever, the annual program demonstrated the power of experiential learning to inspire the next generation of leaders.

Participants didn’t just observe government in action. they became it. Youth legislators drafted, debated, and voted on bills in the same chambers used by Washington’s elected officials. Meanwhile, student lobbyists advocated for or against proposed legislation, and press delegates covered the proceedings, producing articles, interviews, and daily reports.

A highlight of the session was a special address by U.S. Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland, who spoke directly to the youth delegates about the importance of civic participation and education.

Strickland emphasized that understanding government is essential to protecting democracy. She encouraged participants to remain engaged beyond the program, reminding them that informed citizens play a vital role in shaping the future.

Now in its 79th year, the Washington Youth Legislature continues to be one of the longest-running and most impactful youth civic programs in the state. Organized by the YMCA, the program has introduced thousands of students to public service and civic leadership.

As the gavel fell to close the final session on May 2, participants left Olympia not only with a deeper understanding of government, but with a sense of responsibility—and possibility.
